Interstate 94 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin – Travel across southeast Wisconsin could become dangerous overnight as extreme arctic cold drives wind chills to dangerous levels, increasing the risk for motorists and emergency responders.

According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, an Extreme Cold Warning is in effect tonight through early Friday afternoon for much of southeast Wisconsin, including Milwaukee. Wind chills are expected to drop to 30 to 40 degrees below zero, conditions that can cause frostbite in as little as 10 to 20 minutes on exposed skin.

An Extreme Cold Watch remains in effect from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, with wind chills ranging from 20 to 30 below zero as the cold persists into the weekend.

Major travel corridors including Interstate 94, Interstate 43, Interstate 41, and U.S. Highway 18 may remain passable, but officials warn that any vehicle breakdown could quickly become life-threatening. Extreme cold increases the likelihood of dead batteries, fuel line freeze-ups, reduced tire pressure, and mechanical failures, especially overnight.

The Weather Service advises limiting travel when possible and taking precautions if driving is unavoidable. Even short stops outside vehicles can be dangerous during peak cold periods, particularly overnight and early morning.

Motorists are urged to dress in multiple layers, keep emergency supplies in vehicles, ensure phones are fully charged, and share travel plans before heading out. Allow extra time and be prepared for prolonged exposure risks if delayed.

Commuters and overnight drivers using I-94 through the Milwaukee metro area should prepare for dangerous cold exposure risks through Friday afternoon, even without snow or ice.
