I-80 Car Chase After Theft at Joliet Rec Center Ends in Arrest for DUI

Joliet, IL – A car theft and chase ended in the arrest of 43-year-old Sintoria Matthews of Joliet, charged with Motor Vehicle Theft, DUI, and Obstructing Justice. The incident unfolded on February 2, 2024, near Nowell Park Recreation Center.

According to Joliet Police, at 9:17 p.m., officers responded to a stolen vehicle report at 199 Mills Road. The victim, who had reportedly left a vehicle running to warm up, was alerted by bystanders of the theft. Pursuing the vehicle, the victim and another individual followed the suspect, later identified as Matthews, northbound on Gardner Street. Police intercepted the stolen car on Interstate 80, conducting a traffic stop near Meadow Avenue and Davis Avenue in Rockdale.

Upon apprehension, Matthews reportedly displayed signs of alcohol impairment. She was transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility on multiple charges.
