Indiana – Damp roads and low clouds set a muted tone across northern Indiana early, but a sharper winter turn is already lining up. What starts with fog and rain evolves into snow showers and gusty winds, raising travel concerns as holiday traffic continues and New Year’s plans approach.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, patchy fog lingers early, especially in low-lying and rural areas. Rain spreads in Sunday, becoming widespread by afternoon. By Sunday night, colder air pushes in, allowing rain to mix with and change to snow, particularly north of U.S. 6.

Fort Wayne, Auburn, Huntington, and areas toward Angola and the Michigan state line face the highest impacts late Sunday into Monday. Snow showers may create hazardous driving conditions, even with light accumulation. Winds increase sharply behind the system, with gusts up to 40 mph possible Monday, reducing visibility in blowing snow.

Plan extra time if traveling Sunday evening or early Monday. Wet pavement may freeze as temperatures drop into the low 20s, creating slick spots on bridges, overpasses, and ramps along I-69, U.S. 30, and State Road 3. To be fair, snowfall totals remain modest, but timing and wind elevate the risk.

Monday stays cold and blustery, with scattered snow showers continuing through the day. Conditions gradually improve Monday night, though winter holds firm through midweek. New Year’s Eve Wednesday trends cold and mostly cloudy, setting up a chilly start to New Year’s Day 2026 with highs near the lower 20s.

Meteorologists continue monitoring additional lake-enhanced snow chances into the final days of December. More advisories could follow as winter patterns settle in.
