South Bend, IN – A major winter storm continues to push across northern Indiana, southwest Michigan, and northwest Ohio, bringing heavy snow, blowing snow, and significant travel disruption through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana.
Multiple Winter Storm Warnings cover the region, each tied to different snowfall zones and lake-effect potential:
Northern Indiana (Pulaski, Fulton IN, White, Cass IN, Miami, Wabash, Grant, Southern Kosciusko)
From 7 AM today to 10 AM Sunday, 5–8 inches are expected with winds gusting 25–30 mph, causing blowing snow. Heaviest rates arrive this afternoon into early evening.
Indiana–Michigan–Ohio Border Counties (DeKalb, Whitley, Allen IN, Huntington, Wells, Adams, Blackford, Jay; Hillsdale MI; Williams, Defiance, Henry, Putnam, Paulding, Van Wert OH)
From 10 AM today to 10 AM Sunday, totals range 5–8 inches north of US-24, with 3–6 inches south. Winds up to 30 mph may produce drifting.
Lake-Effect Snow Zones (Starke, Marshall, Northern Kosciusko; Elkhart, LaGrange, La Porte, St. Joseph IN; Berrien, Cass MI)
Warnings extend through 7 PM Sunday, with 8–12 inches expected and locally higher totals where lake-effect bands persist on Sunday.
These counties—including South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Goshen, La Porte, Niles, Benton Harbor, and Cassopolis—will see heavy system snow today followed by additional lake-effect bursts.
Far Northeast Indiana & Branch County MI (Noble, Steuben, Branch)
From 10 AM today to 7 PM Sunday, 6–9 inches are forecast, with lake-effect snow also possible Sunday.
Across the entire region, travel will be very difficult, with visibility at times dropping sharply. Roads will become snow-covered quickly this afternoon.
Drivers are urged to delay travel if possible. Those who must travel should keep food, water, blankets, and a flashlight in their vehicle and check 511 for statewide road conditions.
