Baltimore, MD – Commuters and residents across Maryland, northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia should prepare for multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms today as a cold front slowly crosses the region.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, storms are expected to continue through the afternoon and evening, with the strongest activity likely between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. east of US-15. Some storms could reach severe levels, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and localized flooding.
Forecasters note that the cold front will stall south and east of the area overnight. This setup is expected to bring drier conditions Friday north of I-66 and US-50, while scattered showers may linger across southern Maryland and northern Virginia. High temperatures today will reach the mid-70s to low 80s, with cooler overnight lows in the upper 50s to mid-60s.
Looking ahead, the weather service warns that additional rain chances will return this weekend. A stalled front combined with a nearby area of low pressure could produce periods of rain on Saturday, especially across central and southern Maryland. Highs will stay seasonable, ranging from the upper 60s to low 70s.
Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time during evening commutes and remain alert for sudden downpours and ponding on roads. Outdoor plans should be adjusted, as conditions may change quickly with thunderstorm development.
