Lubbock, Texas – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across the Caprock tonight, bringing damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and pockets of heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service warns that scattered storms may impact travel and outdoor events through late evening, particularly in areas west of the I-27 corridor.

According to the NWS in Lubbock, storm activity is expected to diminish overnight before shifting back toward western counties Sunday afternoon. Cities including Muleshoe, Littlefield, and Morton could see renewed thunder chances, while much of the region faces a rapid climb into dangerous heat.

Highs Sunday will range from 95°F in Lubbock to 102°F in Childress and Turkey, creating elevated heat risks for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, drink plenty of water, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.

Roadways may be slick tonight from heavy downpours, especially in low-lying areas prone to quick flooding. Gusty winds could also down small tree limbs and damage light structures.

Storm chances return west of I-27 Sunday afternoon, but the main story for most will be the dangerous heat through early next week.
