Honolulu, HI – Hurricane Hone has formed in the Central Pacific, posing a significant threat to Hawaii. Originally a tropical storm, Hone has been upgraded to a hurricane, with wind speeds ranging from 50 to 75 mph and gusts reaching up to 86 mph. Residents should expect seas between 15 and 25 feet, adding to the storm’s danger.

According to the US National Weather Service in Honolulu, hurricane-force winds extend up to 15 miles from the storm’s center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach out 125 miles. The storm’s center was last tracked at 8 p.m. HST by US Air Force Hurricane aircraft. At that time, it was moving west at 15 mph, with sustained winds measured at 70 mph.

Emergency plans are in effect across Hawaii, particularly on the Big Island. The National Weather Service urges residents to take immediate precautions.
