Huntsville, Ala. – Severe storms could sweep through northern Alabama tonight, bringing the threat of damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes from 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, strong to severe storms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front, impacting areas from Florence and Russellville to Fort Payne and Stevenson. The highest risk stretches from late evening into the early morning hours, with localized timing ranging from 8 p.m. to midnight west of I-65 and from 2 to 6 a.m. farther east.

Cities like Huntsville, Cullman, and Fayetteville (Tenn.) are advised to remain alert overnight. Wind gusts over 60 mph and low-confidence tornado development are possible, especially in elevated terrain. The NWS advises residents to secure outdoor items, ensure wireless alerts are enabled, and have a safe shelter location identified before going to bed.

This system may also bring brief power outages or downed trees due to strong wind bursts. Flashlights, battery packs, and NOAA weather radios are recommended.

Storms should exit the region by early Friday morning, but additional alerts may be issued as confidence in timing and severity evolves overnight. Stay tuned for updates from local emergency officials.
