Huntsville, AL – Residents across northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee are urged to prepare for dangerously cold conditions as a Cold Weather Advisory takes effect Sunday evening and lasts through early Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, the advisory will be in place from 6 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Monday. Overnight low temperatures are expected to fall into the 10 to 15 degree range, while wind chill values could drop to between 0 and 10 degrees, making it feel even colder on exposed skin.
The advisory includes Huntsville, Florence, Russellville, Cullman, Fort Payne, and surrounding communities in north Alabama, along with parts of southern middle Tennessee, including areas near Fayetteville and Sewanee.
Forecasters warn that the combination of very cold temperatures and wind will increase the risk of hypothermia and frostbite, especially for anyone spending extended time outdoors. The cold could also lead to frozen or burst pipes, particularly in homes with exposed plumbing or inadequate insulation.
Officials urge residents to protect people, pets, plants, and pipes by bringing pets indoors, covering exposed skin, insulating outdoor plumbing, and allowing faucets to drip overnight if necessary. Those heading out early Monday morning should bundle up and limit time outdoors.
While temperatures are expected to gradually improve later Monday, the overnight period will be the coldest of the season so far for many areas.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and check on elderly neighbors or anyone without adequate heating ahead of the coldest hours.
