Huntsville, Alabama – Drivers along I-565 and Memorial Parkway should prepare for a rapid warm-up into the 80s by late week, followed by increasing rain and thunderstorm chances that could affect travel by Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, high temperatures will steadily climb through midweek, reaching the upper 70s Wednesday and pushing into the lower to mid-80s by Friday. That places afternoon readings nearly 10 to 15 degrees above early March averages across Madison County and much of the Tennessee Valley.

Skies will feature increasing clouds at times, but most of Wednesday and Thursday remain dry for communities along US-72, I-65 and through downtown Huntsville. By Thursday, isolated showers may begin to develop across northwest Alabama, with rain chances around 20 to 30 percent.

The better opportunity for measurable rainfall arrives Friday into Saturday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop as moisture deepens across northern Alabama. Rain chances increase to 50 to 70 percent Saturday, with brief downpours capable of reducing visibility along I-565 and creating ponding on roadways, especially during heavier cells.

Afternoon highs will remain in the 81 to 84 degree range Friday and Saturday, adding instability for any storms that form. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, a few storms could produce gusty winds and frequent lightning.

Residents should stay weather-aware heading into the weekend, secure outdoor items in advance of storms and allow extra travel time during heavier rainfall. Additional updates are expected as confidence increases in the timing and coverage of Saturday’s storms.
