Chicago, Illinois – Drivers along I-80 and I-57 should prepare for wet pavement and reduced visibility by Wednesday evening as rounds of rain begin lining up south of the city, setting the stage for a warmer but stormier end to the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, lingering light showers early Tuesday will taper, but steadier rain is expected to focus mainly south of I-80 through late Wednesday into Thursday morning. Communities from Joliet to Kankakee and stretching toward the Indiana state line could see the most consistent rainfall, with slick conditions developing during the late-day commute Wednesday.

While northern Cook County and areas near Lake Michigan remain cooler, inland neighborhoods along I-290 and I-355 will see temperatures rebound into the 50s and eventually surge into the upper 60s to low 70s by Friday afternoon. That rapid warm-up will be driven by a strong warm front lifting north across the region Friday.

The warmth will come with increasing wind. Gusts could approach 40 to 50 mph Friday afternoon and evening, especially along I-90 and I-94, creating crosswind concerns for high-profile vehicles. Periodic showers and a few thunderstorms may develop late Friday, with the highest coverage overnight into early Saturday as a cold front sweeps across northern Illinois.

Commuters should allow extra travel time during heavier downpours, secure loose outdoor items ahead of Friday’s wind, and monitor alerts for changing storm timing. Additional updates are expected as the late-week system approaches, with unsettled conditions lingering into early Saturday morning.
