Houston, TX – An extreme cold warning is in effect tonight as Houston faces record-low temperatures near 18°F. Residents are urged to stay indoors and take precautions against hypothermia as the polar vortex grips the region.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will plummet after sunset, with a low of 18°F expected. A Cold Weather Advisory remains active through 6 p.m., with extreme cold expected to linger into Wednesday morning. Roadways such as I-45 may experience icy patches, so drivers should exercise caution during their evening commute.
Relief is on the horizon. After a sunny but frigid Wednesday with a high of 44°F, temperatures will gradually rise. Thursday and Friday promise a noticeable warm-up, with highs nearing 50°F. However, nights will remain cold, dipping below freezing.
The extended forecast shows a slight chance of rain Saturday night, with highs nearing 60°F by Sunday. This shift could signal the end of the bitter cold. Until then, residents are encouraged to protect exposed pipes and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Plan ahead for freezing nights and a return to near-freezing daytime highs tomorrow. The warmest day this week is Friday, with sunshine and a high of 51°F—a welcome break from the polar vortex.
