Hobart Man Killed in Gunshot Homicide: Lake County Authorities Investigate

Hobart, IN – Lake County authorities are investigating a homicide after a 43-year-old man was fatally shot on the 500 block of W. 37th Avenue in Hobart on Monday night. The victim, identified as William McNitt, succumbed to a gunshot wound, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

The Coroner’s Office received notification at 10:12 p.m., dispatching their team to Powers Health/St. Mary Medical Center Emergency Room, where McNitt was pronounced dead at 10:21 p.m. His family later confirmed his identity at the Lake County Forensic Science Center in Crown Point.

On Tuesday, forensic pathologists performed an autopsy, confirming the fatal gunshot wound. Toxicology results are still pending, but officials have classified the death as a homicide.

The New Chicago Police Department and Lake County CSI are actively investigating the case. Authorities have not released additional information about potential suspects or motives.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office continues to support law enforcement in piecing together the incident details.
