Hit-and-Run in Danville Claims Life of Army Veteran

Danville, IL – An early Sunday morning hit-and-run incident claimed the life of James W. Ritter, an 82-year-old Army veteran and Danville resident. The incident occurred at approximately 3:43 a.m. on North Gilbert Street, where Ritter was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.

According to Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden, Ritter’s body was discovered shortly after the incident, and an autopsy was performed Monday. The Illinois State Police and Vermilion County Coroner’s Office are actively investigating the case, seeking any information on the vehicle and driver involved.

Ritter, remembered by the community for his military service and local presence, had no immediate family that authorities could locate. The coroner’s office is urging anyone with information regarding his next of kin to contact them at 217-554-6030.
