Cass County, IN – Nine fire departments across Cass County responded to multiple field fires on Sunday, October 6, battling dry conditions and high winds. The first fires ignited in the Lucerne and Twelve Mile response areas, spreading quickly due to poor visibility and gusty winds. Twelve Mile Fire Department reported that the fires burned approximately 42 acres of beans and standing corn.

Fire departments from Logansport, Royal Center, and surrounding areas, along with support from Fulton County’s Liberty Township Fire Department, provided manpower and tankers to fight the blazes. The fires were fueled by strong winds, worsening conditions.

According to officials, additional fires occurred near Royal Center and Walton, prompting more fire departments to respond. By evening, Twelve Mile Fire Department faced yet another fire, requiring help from Miami County fire crews.

Earlier in the day, the National Weather Service had warned of increased fire risks. Drone technology from Logansport Police Department was used to assist firefighting efforts, providing crucial overhead visuals and thermal imaging to track resources and ensure responder safety.

Cass County’s burn ordinance prohibits open burning during high winds or elevated fire danger.
