Albuquerque, NM – A high wind warning is in effect for much of eastern and central New Mexico on Tuesday, with wind gusts expected to reach up to 75 mph in some areas. Residents should prepare for hazardous conditions, including potential power outages and difficult travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, strong northwest winds will impact multiple counties, including Curry, Quay, Roosevelt, Harding, and Chaves, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. MST Tuesday. Winds will range from 35 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph. Meanwhile, areas such as Johnson and Bartlett Mesas, Raton Pass, and Union County may experience even stronger winds of 40 to 50 mph, with gusts reaching 75 mph.

In the early morning hours, Central and South Central Highlands, De Baca County, Guadalupe County, and Southwest Chaves County will see winds picking up as early as 2 a.m. and continuing through the afternoon. These areas will likely see gusts up to 60 mph.

Officials warn that strong winds could bring down trees and power lines, leading to widespread outages. High-profile vehicles should exercise caution as travel may be hazardous, particularly on U.S. 285 near Roswell and along the Colorado border where blowing snow may reduce visibility.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with local forecasts. Power companies recommend having emergency supplies on hand in case of outages.
