Middlebury, IN – A 14-year-old high school freshman was killed in a crash after he hit another vehicle while operating a dirt bike.
The collision happened Saturday afternoon when the teen was traveling southbound on County Road 35 north of State Road 120. According to eyewitnesses, as reported by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, the other vehicle was traveling westbound on SR 120 east of CR 35 when the teen failed to stop at the stop sign and hit the back of the trailer the other vehicle was pulling.
The teenage boy, identified by Middlebury Community Schools as Aidin Mathieu, would have been an incoming freshman at Northridge High School. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Bristol Paramedics.
Investigators have not released any information about the other driver or vehicle involved. The crash is still under investigation.
In a statement, Middlebury Community Schools expressed their condolences and offered support to those affected by the tragedy. “Administrators have already communicated with the guardian, and out of respect for the family, we are not providing any additional details. A group of MCS administrators and counselors will be meeting Monday morning, and will be ready and willing to help students or staff who need support,” the statement read.
The community is mourning the loss of the young student, and counselors are available to provide support during this difficult time.
