Denver, CO – Breezy and dry conditions are dominating the High Plains today, bringing an elevated risk for wildfires and possible record-breaking warmth across several states.

According to the National Weather Service, strong downslope winds are driving warm, dry air across Wyoming, far southwest South Dakota, far northeast Colorado, and western Nebraska. This setup is creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread, with Red Flag Warnings currently in effect for portions of western Nebraska.

The dry air mass and compressional heating from descending air along the eastern slopes of the Rockies are also pushing temperatures to well above seasonal averages. Forecasters note that record highs are possible today in parts of the Texas Panhandle and the Colorado Front Range, where afternoon highs could challenge early November records.

Residents across the region are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items due to gusty winds, and remain alert for local fire restrictions. The combination of low humidity and persistent breezes could allow any spark to spread quickly.

Forecasters expect these warm, dry conditions to persist into midweek before cooler air and calmer winds return later in the week.
