Hickory Hills, IL – A robbery suspect died after allegedly firing at officers and later taking his own life last Thursday during a encounter in Hickory Hills, Illinois.
According to the Hickory Hills Police Department, the incident began around 8:45 p.m. Thursday, May 29, when an 18-year-old man and his juvenile passenger were confronted by an armed suspect in the parking lot of Hickory Palos Square Shopping Center. The victim reportedly handed over his vehicle’s key fob before calling police.
As officers responded, the suspect was seen fleeing on foot toward the Speedway parking lot on 95th Street. A second officer allegedly confronted the man, who then pointed a handgun and fired multiple rounds. While no officers were hit, a nearby vehicle sustained damage.
Police say an officer returned fire, but the suspect fled into a nearby alley, where he encountered a third officer. As the third officer exited his vehicle and ordered the man to drop his weapon, the suspect allegedly shot himself in the head.
The man was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center and later pronounced deceased. One officer sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.
Authorities identified the suspect as Jonathan Ollry, 42, a former Hickory Hills resident and non-compliant child sex offender with a last known address in Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a suicide.
The Hickory Hills Police Department acknowledged assistance from Bedford Park, Justice, Summit, and Willow Springs police agencies, as well as the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Officials noted the investigation remains active and ongoing.
