Albany, New York – Residents across eastern New York should secure outdoor items and adjust Thursday afternoon plans as thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts, large hail and tree damage, with the greatest severe risk west of Albany.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, eastern New York and western New England face a Marginal, Level 1 of 5, to Slight, Level 2 of 5, severe thunderstorm risk Thursday. The primary window for stronger storms runs from Thursday afternoon into the evening.
The Level 2 risk extends across areas west and southwest of Albany, including portions of the Mohawk Valley and Catskills. Communities around Herkimer, Amsterdam, Cobleskill and Hudson are near or within the higher-risk zone shown by the NWS. Albany, Schenectady and surrounding areas remain vulnerable to thunderstorms as well.
Gusty winds, lightning, heavy rain and large hail are the primary concerns. Stronger cells could bring down tree limbs or trees, creating localized road blockages and power outages. Anyone with Thursday outdoor plans should have access to an indoor shelter and a reliable way to receive warnings.
Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing visibility during heavier rain and avoid roads blocked by fallen trees or wires.
The severe threat continues into Thursday evening. Additional watches or warnings could be issued as storm timing and intensity become clearer.
