Oakland, MD – A significant winter storm has blanketed Garrett County with heavy snow, prompting a Winter Storm Warning through 3 a.m. Saturday. Residents and travelers are urged to take precautions as hazardous conditions intensify.
According to the National Weather Service, snow totals are expected to range from 6 to 12 inches, with some areas along the ridgetops possibly seeing 1 to 2 feet of accumulation. Winds are forecast to gust as high as 45 mph, reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile and creating whiteout conditions throughout Friday and into the night.
The storm may also bring a transition to freezing rain or drizzle late Friday night into Saturday morning, further complicating travel and increasing the risk of ice accumulation on roads and bridges. The agency warns of treacherous travel conditions, particularly during commutes Friday evening, with some roads becoming impassable.
Officials recommend avoiding travel if possible and preparing emergency kits with flashlights, food, and water if driving is unavoidable. For up-to-date road conditions, Maryland residents can call 511.
This storm is part of a larger system sweeping across the region, impacting travel and daily routines as winter weather sets in.
