Champaign, IL – Central Illinois is set to experience multiple rounds of heavy rain and gusty winds from Sunday night through Tuesday, impacting areas west of I-57 and along the Illinois River Valley. Residents should prepare for periods of intense rainfall, which may cause localized flooding and create challenging travel conditions, especially during peak hours on major roadways such as I-57 and I-74.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, showers will continue intermittently, with the heaviest rainfall expected late Monday into Tuesday morning. Gusts reaching up to 40 mph are anticipated, adding to potential hazards. Monday night and early Tuesday may see significant rainfall, with 2-3 inches expected west of the Illinois River and decreasing amounts further east. This heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas and near rivers and creeks, so residents are advised to monitor weather alerts closely.

The forecast predicts temperatures between 66 and 75 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, with rain persisting throughout both days. Winds will begin to strengthen on Monday, peaking between 30 and 40 mph, particularly in open and elevated areas. Tuesday night may see a decrease in rain but could still experience occasional gusts. By Wednesday, conditions are expected to clear, with sunny skies and highs in the low 60s, offering a respite for Central Illinois.

In preparation, travelers are advised to allow extra time for commutes, secure outdoor items, and remain cautious of potential ponding on roadways. Central Illinois residents should continue to stay updated through local weather alerts as conditions evolve.
