Charleston, WV – Residents of Charleston and surrounding areas are bracing for severe winter weather as a major storm brings snow, ice, and hazardous conditions through Tuesday morning. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect, with up to 11 inches of snow and significant ice accumulation forecasted in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), heavy mixed precipitation is expected to begin late Sunday and continue into Monday. Snow accumulations of up to 8 inches, combined with up to a half-inch of ice, could lead to widespread power outages and tree damage. Winds may gust as high as 35 mph, further worsening the storm’s impact. Travelers should expect treacherous road conditions, particularly along major routes like I-77, and are urged to avoid unnecessary trips.

The storm will begin as snow Sunday evening, transitioning to a wintry mix overnight. Freezing rain is likely Monday morning, creating a high risk of icy roads during the morning commute. Conditions may briefly improve in the afternoon before snow showers resume by evening.

The NWS advises residents to prepare emergency kits, including flashlights, food, and water, and to monitor updates. Those traveling should check road conditions by dialing 511 or visiting local transportation websites.

The five-day forecast predicts mostly cloudy skies by midweek, with continued low temperatures and a slight chance of additional snow Wednesday.
