Honolulu, HI – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snowfall to the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a Winter Storm Warning through 6 a.m. HST Saturday.

According to the NWS, the storm is expected to dump 10 to 12 inches of snow, significantly reducing visibility and making travel extremely dangerous. Blowing snow and strong winds could lead to whiteout conditions, with periods of zero visibility.

Officials are urging residents and visitors to avoid traveling to the summits until conditions improve. The combination of heavy snow, strong winds, and freezing temperatures could create life-threatening conditions for those unprepared.

The Big Island’s highest peaks frequently experience winter weather, but this storm’s intensity could make travel impossible. Authorities advise checking road conditions before attempting any summit trips and postponing non-essential travel.

The warning remains in effect until early Saturday morning, with conditions expected to gradually improve afterward.
