Honolulu, HI – A rare winter storm is set to impact the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, with up to 8 inches of snow and icy conditions expected from Thursday morning through Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, a strong winter low-pressure system will bring periods of heavy snow and ice to the Big Island’s highest elevations. Temperatures will drop below freezing, allowing a light glaze of ice to form on wet surfaces.
Travel conditions will be hazardous, with blowing snow and near-zero visibility making roads and trails dangerous. Officials warn that travel to the summits could be extremely difficult or even impossible during the storm.
Residents and visitors planning trips to Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa are urged to reconsider their plans and monitor weather updates. Those already at the summits should take precautions and prepare for extreme winter conditions.
