Carlsbad, NM – Strong winds are expected to impact portions of southeast New Mexico and west Texas today, with gusts reaching up to 70 mph. A High Wind Warning is in effect from 9 a.m. MST (10 a.m. CST) until 8 p.m. MST (9 p.m. CST) for areas including the Guadalupe Mountains, Davis Mountains, and Eddy County Plains.

According to the National Weather Service, sustained west winds of 35 to 45 mphwill make travel difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as campers, vans, and tractor-trailers. Severe turbulence is also expected near the mountains, posing risks to low-flying aircraft.

Drivers should avoid travel if possible, especially in higher elevations where the strongest winds are expected. Those flying in the region should exercise caution near mountain ranges due to potential turbulence. Blowing dust may also reduce visibility, creating additional travel hazards.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects and stay indoors if possible. Winds are expected to gradually weaken after 9 p.m. CST.
