Nebraska – Frost clings to fields and rooftops this morning, and that cold bite could damage crops before a sharp and risky weather swing unfolds by afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, a Freeze Warning remains in effect through mid-morning with temperatures dropping as low as 29°F across Hastings and surrounding counties. Sensitive vegetation and early spring planting face damage if left unprotected.

By midday, conditions flip fast. Sunshine pushes highs near 58°F, but dry air and strengthening northwest winds create a different threat. A Red Flag Warning is in place from noon through the evening, with gusts reaching 30 to 35 mph and humidity falling as low as 14 percent. Fires can spread quickly under these conditions, especially along open fields and rural roadways.

Across south central Nebraska into north central Kansas, including Grand Island, Kearney, and Hebron, the contrast is sharp. Early icy patches may linger on bridges and low-lying roads, especially where moisture refroze. By afternoon, those same areas turn dry and vulnerable to fire ignition. Avoid outdoor burning and secure anything that could spark.

Looking ahead, temperatures rebound quickly. Sunday brings sunshine and highs near 70°F, followed by a jump to around 80°F Monday. However, another round of early morning frost remains possible before that warm-up fully settles in.
