Hastings, NE – The chill cuts deep across the plains this morning — a sign that December’s first snow is moving in. Meteorologists are tracking a light but widespread snow event from late Sunday into Monday, followed by dangerously cold wind chills dipping below zero by early Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, light snow will spread into south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas tonight, with up to one inch north of Interstate 80 and as much as 2 to 3 inches possible south of the state line. While winds will remain light, visibility could briefly drop during heavier bursts, especially along I-80, Highway 281, and Route 6.

Drivers should prepare for slick roads and reduced traction on untreated surfaces through Monday morning. Though accumulations remain modest, even light snow combined with subfreezing temperatures can make early travel treacherous.

By Monday afternoon, skies will gradually clear, but cold air will surge behind the system. Wind chills could plunge below zero by early Tuesday, especially before sunrise. Bundle up — this is a sharp start to December’s first cold snap.

Five-Day Outlook:

  • Sunday: Increasing clouds, high 20°F.
  • Monday: Chance of snow, high 26°F.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high 36°F.
  • Wednesday: Partly cloudy, high 33°F.
  • Thursday: Sunny, high 38°F.
