Hastings, Nebraska – Drivers across south-central Nebraska are waking up to sharply reduced visibility Wednesday morning, with some highways dropping to a quarter mile or less before midmorning.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Wednesday for western and central portions of the area. Visibility may fall between one-half mile and one-quarter mile at times, especially along and west of US-281 and near the I-80 corridor.

Communities including Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney and Holdrege could see rapidly changing conditions around sunrise. Rural highways such as US-6 and Highway 34 are particularly vulnerable to sudden visibility drops in low-lying areas. Drivers may encounter clear stretches followed by dense fog within a few miles.

The limited visibility can reduce sight distance to less than 1,320 feet, making it difficult to see brake lights, intersections and slow-moving farm equipment. Morning school routes and commercial truck traffic along I-80 may experience delays as drivers slow to adjust.

Motorists should use low-beam headlights, reduce speed and increase following distance. Avoid abrupt lane changes and allow extra travel time to reach destinations safely. If visibility becomes too poor, consider delaying travel until conditions improve.

Fog is expected to gradually lift by mid to late morning as temperatures rise and light winds develop. However, pockets of reduced visibility could linger beyond 11 a.m. in isolated spots. Additional advisories may be issued if fog redevelops overnight.
