Hastings, Nebraska — A combination of damaging winds, elevated fire danger, and dangerous cold will impact the Hastings area beginning Friday and continuing into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a High Wind Watch is in effect Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with northwest winds sustained at 30 to 40 mph and gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph. Gusts of at least 50 mph are expected across the entire area, with the strongest winds likely during the afternoon.
At the same time, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect noon to 6 p.m. Friday. Relative humidity may drop as low as 20 percent, and officials warn that any fires that start could spread rapidly and be difficult to control. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
Behind the wind, much colder air arrives Friday night, making this the coldest night since at least late December. Air temperatures falling into the single digits to teens, combined with 15–25 mph winds, will drive wind chill values well below zero, with some locations experiencing the lowest wind chills of the season so far.
Travel may become difficult Friday due to strong crosswinds, especially for high-profile vehicles along east–west highways. Brief light snow showers are possible north of Highway 92, which could locally reduce visibility.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid outdoor burning, dress in layers, and limit time outdoors Friday night into Saturday.
This alert is especially relevant for farmers, firefighters, truck drivers, outdoor workers, and anyone traveling Friday, as multiple hazards will overlap during the same time period.
