Harrisburg, PA – Periods of rain and milder air will send rivers climbing across Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey through Saturday, raising concerns for minor flooding in low-lying areas by the end of the week.

According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, on-and-off rain will continue into Thursday, with steadier and heavier rainfall expected Thursday night into Friday, especially across northern Pennsylvania and upstate New York. Widespread totals between 1 and 1.5 inches are likely, combining with melting snow to accelerate runoff into area rivers and streams.

Small river rises are already underway through Wednesday, but sharper increases of a few to several feet are expected Friday into Saturday. The Susquehanna, Delaware and upper Allegheny River basins will see the most noticeable changes, particularly near Harrisburg, Wilkes-Barre, Binghamton and Trenton. Poor drainage areas and smaller creeks could approach bankfull if heavier bands set up.

Drivers should avoid water-covered roads and remain alert near typical flood-prone stretches, including low-lying rural routes and urban underpasses. Residents in flood-sensitive areas should clear storm drains and secure outdoor items ahead of the steadier rain Thursday night.

River levels will be closely monitored through the weekend, and additional advisories could be issued if rainfall trends higher than expected.
