Harris County, TX – A Harris County man is facing charges after allegedly opening fire on deputies during an early morning ambush near Atascocita, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
Deputies responded to a call for service in the 18600 block of Atlantic Drive near Humble when they were met with gunfire. Sheriff Gonzalez said the suspect, identified as Kenyon Levor Coleman, 47, was armed with an automatic rifle and appeared to be waiting in a wooded area.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the rifle reportedly jammed during the incident, preventing any deputies from being injured. Coleman then retreated into the woods but was quickly located and taken into custody. The weapon and ammunition were recovered at the scene.
Investigators believe the call for service may have been a fake or swatting attempt. Coleman was reportedly dressed in all black and had a chair positioned with the rifle and “numerous amounts of ammunition.”
Coleman was charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and booked into the Harris County Jail. Sheriff Gonzalez said he was thankful none of his deputies were hurt during the incident.
