Hanover County, VA – A wanted individual died Sunday morning after fleeing deputies during a traffic stop and suffering what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a vehicle pursuit.
According to the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, deputies spotted a known wanted subject driving on Lee-Davis Road at approximately 10:05 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, and attempted a traffic stop. The driver allegedly failed to stop and fled, prompting a brief pursuit.
During the chase, deputies reportedly observed the driver display a handgun while continuing onto Atlee Road. Authorities said deputies then performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, bringing the vehicle to a stop and ending the pursuit.
As deputies exited their patrol vehicles to take the driver into custody, they heard a single gunshot, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies found the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, suffering from what officials described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Deputies immediately began lifesaving measures until Hanover Fire-EMS personnel arrived. The driver was later pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The individual’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The incident remains under active investigation. The Sheriff’s Office has not released additional information about the outstanding warrants or the circumstances leading to the attempted apprehension.
