San Joaquin Valley, California – Dense fog is expected to create hazardous travel conditions across the San Joaquin Valley early Wednesday, prompting warnings of a high transportation risk during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, covering much of the San Joaquin Valley. Forecasters warn that visibility could drop to 250 feet or less in some locations, making driving especially dangerous.

The advisory highlights increased risk along major travel corridors, including Highways 99, 41, 140, 180, 198, and Interstate 5, where dense fog may significantly reduce visibility during peak travel hours. Conditions may vary rapidly, with pockets of thick fog developing unexpectedly.

The National Weather Service urges drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave extra distance between vehicles. Motorists should anticipate travel delays and be alert for slowed or stopped traffic ahead, particularly in areas where fog becomes especially dense.

The Weather Service’s experimental Fog Severity Index indicates a high likelihood of significant fog impacts across the valley, reinforcing concerns about roadway safety. Even experienced drivers may find conditions challenging when visibility drops sharply over short distances.

The advisory remains valid until late Wednesday morning, when fog is expected to gradually lift as daytime heating improves visibility.

Communities across the San Joaquin Valley, including areas near Fresno, Hanford, Visalia, Bakersfield, and surrounding rural highways, may be affected.

Drivers are encouraged to monitor local conditions before traveling and adjust plans if necessary during the advisory period.
