Greensboro, NC – Deputies in Guilford County responded to two unrelated school safety incidents Friday, but officials say there is no ongoing threat to students or the community.
According to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, the first incident occurred Friday at the Southeast Guilford High School football game when a security scanner alerted staff to a possible weapon. A former student, identified as 22-year-old Octavius Mustophiade Benton II, allegedly told a school resource officer he had a firearm on his waistband. Deputies say Benton was taken into custody without incident.
Benton was charged with misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon and felony possession of a weapon on school property. He was booked into the Guilford County Detention Center and later released on a $2,500 unsecured bond. His first court appearance is set for September 30 at 8:25 a.m.
Later that day, at approximately 4:45 p.m., the principal of Summerfield Elementary School reported receiving an email from a juvenile former student that insinuated a possible threat against students. Investigators quickly tracked down the sender and spoke with the juvenile and their legal guardians.
Deputies determined there was no credible evidence of an immediate threat and confirmed that the investigation is now closed.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that deputies acted quickly in both cases and confirmed that students, staff, and the wider community remain safe.
