South Carolina wakes up under a gray veil as headlights glow softly through thick fog across the Upstate. Moist air clings to roadways, and visibility drops suddenly, forcing drivers to slow and lean forward behind the wheel.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning Monday. Visibility may fall to a quarter mile or less in spots, especially along low-lying roads, valleys, and near rivers. The fog stretches across much of Upstate South Carolina, northeast Georgia, and parts of western North Carolina.

Morning commuters face the greatest risk. Wet pavement combined with fog can hide stopped traffic and lane changes with little warning. Drivers along I-85, I-26, and Highway 29 should expect sudden visibility drops. School traffic adds pressure as students return from the holiday break.

Calm winds and high humidity keep fog locked in place early. Conditions improve gradually as temperatures climb toward the upper 50s. Clouds thin later, allowing breaks of sunshine by afternoon.

Tonight stays mostly cloudy, with lows dipping into the low 40s. Patchy fog may redevelop in sheltered areas, though it should not be as widespread. Tuesday brings a noticeable shift. Sunshine returns, highs reach the mid-60s, and southwest winds increase, helping keep fog away.

By Wednesday, temperatures push near 70 degrees under mostly sunny skies. Thursday remains mild and pleasant before rain chances increase closer to the weekend. While winter weather grips other regions, the Upstate leans warmer, though fog remains a recurring cold-season hazard.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave extra distance between vehicles this morning. Visibility can change in seconds.
