Greenville, SC – Windy and unusually dry conditions are expected across parts of northeast Georgia and western North Carolina today, raising fire concerns and prompting weather alerts that could impact travel and outdoor activities.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect Sunday afternoon for portions of northeast Georgia, including areas near Gainesville, Clayton, and the Chattahoochee National Forest. Forecasters say low humidity combined with gusty winds could allow fires to spread quickly if they ignite.
At the same time, a Wind Advisory is in place for higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains, including Asheville, Boone, and surrounding communities, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Peak wind gusts are expected to reach 40 to 50 mph, especially along ridgelines and exposed areas.
The strongest winds are expected late Sunday morning into early afternoon, with conditions gradually easing later in the day. However, very low relative humidity is expected to persist through the afternoon, particularly across northeast Georgia.
Drivers in mountain المناطق may experience difficult travel, especially on north-south roads and higher elevation routes. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, as even small sparks could lead to rapidly spreading fires under these conditions.
Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid open flames, and remain alert for any local emergency updates.
