Green Bay, Wisconsin – Two rounds of light snow are expected to impact central and northern Wisconsin on Thursday, potentially creating slippery travel conditions on area roadways during both daytime and nighttime hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, the first round of snow is expected Thursday morning into the early afternoon, followed by a second round arriving Thursday evening and continuing overnight. Snowfall totals will generally range from around one inch or less across central Wisconsin, with 1 to 2 inches possible farther north, and a few localized areas potentially approaching 3 inches.

Forecasters note that freezing drizzle may briefly mix in toward the end of each snow round, which could create icy patches even where snowfall amounts remain light. As a result, slippery road conditions are possible, particularly during the morning and evening commute periods.

Major travel corridors likely to be affected include Interstate 41, Interstate 39, U.S. Highway 51, U.S. Highway 141, and U.S. Highway 10, impacting travel through Green Bay, Appleton, Wausau, Stevens Point, and surrounding communities. Conditions may vary significantly between the two snow rounds, with temporary improvement possible during the afternoon before deteriorating again after sunset.

The National Weather Service emphasized that while snowfall totals are not expected to be high, the timing of the snow and potential for freezing drizzle increases the risk for travel issues. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads are most likely to become slick.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for changing conditions, especially during the Thursday morning and Thursday night travel windows.

Students, commuters, and shift workers traveling along I-41 and I-39 should plan for extra travel time and monitor updated forecasts as the system moves through.

This forecast is based on guidance issued early Wednesday morning and will be updated if snowfall amounts or timing change.
