Chicago, IL – A powerful Arctic cold front is sweeping through the Great Lakes and New England, bringing blizzard-like conditions, heavy snow, and dangerous travel through Thursday. Snow squalls and wind gusts up to 50 mph will create whiteouts, hazardous road conditions, and widespread power outage risks.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall totals could reach up to a foot in lake-effect areas, with localized higher amounts near the Great Lakes shoreline. Snow squalls will reduce visibility to near zero, making travel along interstates, including I-94, I-90, and I-80, especially treacherous. Residents are advised to avoid travel where possible and be prepared for sudden bursts of intense snow and wind.

High winds are expected to spread across the region, downing trees and power lines. Utility crews are on standby as outages are anticipated in parts of Michigan, Ohio, and northern Indiana. Residents in New England can expect similar conditions by late Thursday, with strong winds and heavy snow spreading into Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

The storm will peak Thursday morning but continue into the afternoon before tapering off. Temperatures will remain below freezing throughout the region, creating slick roads and icy conditions into the weekend. Drivers are urged to carry emergency kits, and commuters should allow extra time or delay plans.

Looking ahead, the weekend may offer slight relief, but another storm system could arrive by Sunday night, potentially bringing mixed precipitation to southern areas of the Great Lakes.

Stay informed by monitoring local forecasts and adhering to travel advisories. Stock up on essentials, charge electronic devices, and avoid unnecessary trips as the storm progresses.
