Michigan – Wet pavement glistens under streetlights this morning as rain fades and colder air surges in from the north. By daybreak, flakes replace drops, and temperatures slide quickly toward freezing. The shift feels sudden, and travel conditions may change just as fast.
The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids warns that rain showers this evening and early morning will change to snow before sunrise. As temperatures fall below freezing, untreated roads may ice over. Meteorologists caution that the morning commute could be impacted by slick spots and reduced traction.
Lake-effect snow showers expand today, especially near and west of U.S.-131 and toward the Lake Michigan shoreline. While initial snowfall amounts stay light, accumulating snow becomes more persistent through tonight and Thursday. Roads may turn snow-covered and slippery as bands redevelop through the day.
By Friday, a stronger burst of lake-effect snow is expected. Forecast guidance shows widespread snow showers with accumulations around three inches possible in the Grand Rapids area. Gusty winds may reduce visibility at times, especially on open stretches of I-96, M-6, and U.S.-131.
Cold air settles in behind the snow. Daytime highs struggle to reach the upper 20s and lower 30s, while overnight lows drop into the teens. Any melting during daylight hours could refreeze quickly after sunset, increasing black ice risks through the weekend.
Snow chances linger into Saturday and Sunday, keeping winter firmly in place across southwest Lower Michigan. While no major storm is locked in yet, repeated snow showers and cold pavement mean travel impacts remain likely.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and plan extra time today and through Friday. Walking this morning? Watch for slick sidewalks. Seeing snow stick where you are? Share conditions with us.
