Grand Rapids, MI – Lake effect snow showers and an Arctic air mass are set to sweep across western Michigan starting Sunday. Temperatures will plummet, with wind chills reaching as low as -15°F, posing frostbite risks on exposed skin within 30 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, snow showers are expected to intensify Sunday afternoon, with accumulation near the Lake Michigan shoreline and reduced visibility impacting travel on key roadways like US-131 and I-96. Motorists should exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
By Sunday night, temperatures will drop to single digits, with overnight lows around 7°F. Snow will persist into Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, with up to 2 inches of accumulation and dangerous wind chills. Tuesday brings colder weather, with daytime highs near 4°F and wind chills dipping further below zero.
Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions by limiting outdoor exposure, checking vehicle readiness, and securing emergency supplies. The frigid conditions will continue through midweek, with only slight improvement expected by Wednesday.
As lake effect snow develops, blowing and drifting may also complicate visibility along open stretches of highway. Prepare now to ensure safety during this prolonged cold spell.
