Grand Forks, N.D. – Strong winds are set to sweep across the Red River Valley Friday, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph during the afternoon and evening hours. Drivers and residents should brace for hazardous travel and scattered tree damage as conditions intensify.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a wind advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. for parts of northeast North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Cities in the advisory zone include Grand Forks, Devils Lake, Valley City, Crookston, Thief River Falls, and Roseau.
High-profile vehicles will be at greatest risk on open stretches of Interstate 29, Highway 2, and rural county roads, where crosswinds could cause sudden sways. Loose outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash bins should be secured to avoid being blown around. Tree limbs may also snap under the force of gusts, raising the chance of scattered power outages.
Wind speeds are expected to ease after sunset, though blustery conditions could linger into early Saturday morning before calmer weather returns. Additional advisories may be issued if winds remain elevated.
