Grand Forks, North Dakota – Travel across eastern North Dakota could become hazardous Sunday as a wintry mix develops late this morning and continues through the afternoon and evening, bringing the risk of slick roads from light icing, sleet, and snow.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the system is expected to arrive by late morning and persist into Sunday night. A light glaze of ice is possible in many locations, with sleet and snow accumulations adding up to around one inch in some areas. While ice amounts are expected to remain light, even small accumulations can quickly create dangerous driving conditions.
The highest potential for travel impacts includes Grand Forks, Fargo, Devils Lake, Jamestown, and surrounding portions of the Red River Valley. Interstate 29, Highway 2, and Highway 81 could see slippery stretches, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated rural roads. Visibility may also briefly decrease during heavier bursts of snow or sleet.
Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check road conditions before heading out. The North Dakota Department of Transportation advises allowing extra travel time and avoiding sudden braking on icy surfaces.
Wintry conditions are expected to gradually improve late Sunday night as precipitation tapers off, though slick spots may linger into early Monday. Additional updates or advisories could be issued if icing becomes more widespread.
