Grand Forks, North Dakota – Bitterly cold conditions are expected to return tonight across northeast North Dakota and portions of northwest and west-central Minnesota, with wind chills plunging into the -30 to -40 degree range, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks.

Forecasters say temperatures will “drop like a rock” this evening, and even light winds will be enough to drive wind chill values well below dangerous thresholds. As a result, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service, wind chills below -30 degrees are expected at times tonight across northeastern North Dakota, northwestern Minnesota, and parts of west-central Minnesota. In some locations, wind chills may briefly approach -40 degrees, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.

At these levels, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes or less, and prolonged exposure increases the risk of hypothermia. Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and ensure all exposed skin is covered if venturing outside.

The extreme cold also poses risks for vehicles, pets, and infrastructure. Residents are encouraged to bring pets indoors, check vehicle readiness, and be prepared for cold-related issues such as dead batteries and frozen equipment. Those traveling overnight or early Tuesday should be prepared for dangerous cold if stranded or delayed.

The cold weather advisory highlights that even modest winds can significantly worsen conditions, making the air feel far colder than actual temperatures. Emergency officials emphasize checking on vulnerable individuals, including the elderly and those without reliable heat.

The National Weather Service advises residents to continue monitoring updates and to take cold weather precautions seriously as the region remains locked in an Arctic air mass.
