Glasgow, MT – At 3:27 PM MST Sunday, the National Weather Service in Glasgow, Montana, issued a High Wind Watch for Phillips County, warning that dangerous west winds could develop late Monday and continue into Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, winds are expected to strengthen after 5 PM Monday, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph possible through 11 AM MST Tuesday. The strongest winds are forecast overnight into early Tuesday, creating hazardous travel conditions across the region.
The watch includes the Glasgow area and surrounding portions of Phillips County, including travel corridors such as Highway 191, where crosswinds could be especially dangerous. Officials warn that high-profile vehicles, including semi-trucks, campers, trailers, and farm equipment, may have difficulty maintaining control during peak wind periods.
Forecasters say the increasing winds are tied to a strengthening weather system moving across northeastern Montana. While widespread damage is not guaranteed, loose objects may be blown around, and isolated impacts such as downed tree limbs or minor property damage are possible if winds intensify as expected.
Drivers are urged to use caution, particularly Monday night and early Tuesday morning. Those hauling trailers or driving taller vehicles should consider delaying travel until winds subside. Residents are also encouraged to secure loose outdoor items ahead of the strongest gusts.
A High Wind Watch means conditions are favorable for sustained winds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or higher, but confidence on exact timing and strength will continue to be refined. The watch may be upgraded to a High Wind Warning if confidence increases.
The National Weather Service urges residents to monitor forecasts and alerts closely over the next 24 hours as details become clearer.
