Atlanta, Ga. – Residents across north and central Georgia should prepare for a prolonged stretch of hot, humid weather with daily rounds of afternoon and evening thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rainfall, gusty winds and frequent lightning through at least Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, showers and thunderstorms are possible each day over the next five days, with storm coverage expected to peak during the afternoon and evening hours. While not every community will receive rain each day, a few storms could become strong enough to produce localized heavy rainfall, gusty winds and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning.

Temperatures will remain above seasonal averages across the region. Highs are forecast to reach the upper 80s to mid-90s, including 91 to 96 degrees across central Georgia and 85 to 95 degrees across north Georgia. Combined with high humidity, heat index values will climb into the upper 90s and could exceed 100 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illness for those spending extended time outdoors.

Communities including Atlanta, Athens, Gainesville, Rome, Macon, Columbus, Griffin and surrounding areas should plan for rapidly changing weather during the afternoon commute. Residents should seek shelter immediately if thunder is heard, avoid flooded roadways and stay hydrated by limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

A weak cold front may bring slightly cooler and drier weather by Thursday, but scattered thunderstorms will remain possible. Additional advisories or severe thunderstorm warnings could be issued on days when storms become more organized.
