Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan residents and hunters heading out for the season opener should prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions this weekend, with rain, strong winds, and a sharp cold front set to move through the region Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, morning clouds will decrease today, allowing for partly sunny skies and highs ranging from the mid-40s to upper 50s. Conditions will stay mild through the afternoon before a significant pattern shift begins overnight.
Forecasters say a sharp cold front will sweep across Michigan on Saturday, bringing widespread rain showers and increasing winds. Highs are expected to reach the low 50s to low 60s before temperatures fall late in the day. Numerous showers are likely in the eastern Upper Peninsula, while scattered showers are expected across northwest and northeast Lower Michigan. Gusts could reach 25 to 35 mph in some areas by late afternoon.
The colder air settles in quickly on Sunday. According to the weather service, highs will only reach the upper 30s to low 40s, and lake-effect snow showers are expected to develop, especially across northern Lower Michigan and the eastern U.P. Winds will remain brisk, adding to the chill and producing occasional reduced visibility in heavier bursts of snow.
Monday will stay cool, with highs in the mid-30s to low 40s and a continued chance of snow showers, though conditions are expected to be less windy than Sunday.
Hunters and travelers should plan for wet and windy conditions Saturday, followed by a colder and more wintry setup to close out the weekend. If you’ll be in the woods or on the roads, be prepared for rapidly shifting weather and slippery conditions Sunday.
