Wheaton, Ill. — Gary Avenue has been reduced to a one lane road in an update to the Gary Avenue Improvement Project between Jewell Road and Prairie Avenue. This lane closure is expected to last one to two weeks, according to the City of Wheaton Engineering Department.
Though a flagger will be present to direct traffic both ways around the lane closure, the city still advises drivers to seek alternate routes. In this phase of the project, crews have begun installing new storm sewer and relocating utilities. The next phase will widen the pavement between Jewell Road and Prairie Avenue to restore two-way traffic.
The Gary Avenue Improvement Project is meant to expand the roadway and make local destinations more accessible for pedestrians. Crews will reconstruct the road and expand the culvert. A turn lane, stoplight and marked crosswalk will be added at the intersection at Prairie Avenue. A path will also be added for pedestrians.
The project began in late March, with road closures beginning March 26. Crews predicted road closures to last until mid-summer with the project finishing completely in late fall.
