North Platte, NE – Nebraska residents are bracing for extreme cold conditions as wind chills are forecast to drop as low as 35 degrees below zero. The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory until midnight Sunday, followed by an Extreme Cold Warning from midnight to noon Monday. A second Cold Weather Advisory will remain in effect from noon Monday until noon Tuesday.
According to the NWS, the dangerously low wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes. Prolonged exposure to these conditions may lead to hypothermia and other cold-related illnesses. Additionally, freezing temperatures could result in ruptured water pipes if precautions are not taken.
Residents are urged to dress in warm layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks, when venturing outdoors. Pets should be brought indoors or provided with adequate shelter, food, and unfrozen water. Portable heaters should be used with care, and generators or grills must never be operated indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
This cold snap affects north-central, panhandle, and west-central Nebraska, including cities like Valentine, Gordon, and Hyannis. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through Tuesday, with conditions gradually improving by midweek.
