Chicago, IL – A bitter cold front is set to descend across Illinois starting Saturday night, bringing dangerously low wind chills that could drop to -25 degrees. The National Weather Service has issued excessive cold risk alerts through Tuesday, with frostbite possible in just 30 minutes.
According to the National Weather Service, the coldest conditions will arrive Sunday night and persist through Tuesday morning. Temperatures will fall into the single digits, with sub-zero wind chills across the region, particularly near the I-55 corridor. Saturday will see highs in the 20s before temperatures plunge to -3°F overnight.
The frigid weather may disrupt travel and pose significant risks to those without proper precautions. Residents are advised to dress in layers, limit outdoor exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Frostbite can occur quickly under these conditions, especially Sunday through Monday when wind chills reach their lowest.
The cold will persist into Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with a high of just 8°F in Chicago and a chance of flurries. Monday night temperatures will dip to -6°F before a slight improvement Tuesday, with highs near 5°F. The extended cold spell emphasizes the importance of staying warm and prepared, especially for those traveling or working outdoors.
